This easy recipe calls for simple ingredients and a quick stir-together BBQ sauce that infuses the shredded chicken with delicious sweet-tangy sauce flavor. Serve it as BBQ pulled chicken sandwiches, wraps, or over baked potatoes.
Ingredients

- 1/2 kg Chicken
- 250 grams Onion
- 100 ml BBQ Sauce
- 1 tsp Salt
- 1 tsp
- 1 tsp red chilli
- 3 tsp black suice
Preparation
Here is a quick step-by-step of the few hands-on tasks involved:

- Make the BBQ sauce – this step involves stirring together a few ingredients in a bowl, including the tomato paste, water, brown sugar, Dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and dry spices.
- Fill the slow cooker – next, place the sliced onion in the bottom of the slow cooker, place the chicken on top of that, and pour the BBQ sauce over top. Place the lid on the slow cooker and set it to cook on the high or low heat setting.
- Shred the chicken — remove the chicken and onions from the slow cooker and shred it with two forks or shredder claws. Then return the shredded chicken to the slow cooker and toss it with the sauce for the saucy best chicken you’ve ever tasted.

here really isn’t a difference between pulled chicken and shredded chicken – they are the same thing. But there are a few different ways to shred chicken and tools that help. Some people swear by shredding chicken in a stand mixer, but that’s not the best option for a saucy recipe like this. Instead, these are my go-to ways:
- Shred with two forks – simply use two forks to pull and shred the chicken in opposite directions.
- Use a meat shredder tool – this rotating chicken shredded tool makes fast work of shredding chicken and requires less muscle. I find that it tends to create bigger shreds of chicken, so if larger pieces are desired, use this method.
- Use shredder claws – I received a set of these meat shredder claws for Christmas a few years ago and they are my favorite hand-held tools for making quick work of shredding chicken. They look like sharp bear paws and work well to make smaller pieces.

Tips
1. Meat Selection & Preparation
- Mix Breasts and Thighs: Chicken breasts are easy to dry out when cooked for a time. A 50/50 split of boneless skinless breasts and thighs gives the balance—thighs bring rich moisture and deep flavor while breasts give a great meaty texture.
- Season Before Searing or Slow‑Cooking: Do not rely on the BBQ sauce for flavor. Season the chicken generously with a rub (garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, salt, black pepper and a touch of brown sugar or chili powder) before adding sauce.
2. Flavor & Moisture Techniques
- Sear for Depth (Optional but Great): If you have a few minutes quickly sear the seasoned chicken in a hot skillet for 2–3 minutes on each side before slow cooking. This adds a caramelized base flavor.
- Add an Acidic Liquid: Add 2–3 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar or apple juice along with the BBQ sauce. The acid breaks down muscle fibers to keep the chicken tender and cuts through the sweetness of the sauce.
- Hold Back Some Sauce: Save about one‑third of the BBQ sauce to toss with the chicken after shredding. Sauce cooked for hours loses some of its fresh punch; adding fresh sauce at the end brings the flavors back to life.
3. Cooking Methods
- Slow Cooker (Best Texture): Cook on LOW for 3 to 4 hours (or HIGH for 2 to 2.5 hours). Avoid overcooking on heat for too long because chicken breast can become stringy and rubbery when overcooked.
- Instant Pot / Pressure Cooker (Fastest): Cook on High Pressure for 8–10 minutes then allow a 10‑minute natural pressure release (NPR) before venting remaining steam. Quick release can force moisture out of the meat quickly making it dry.
4. Effortless Shredding & Serving
- The Hand Mixer Trick: of using two forks transfer warm chicken into a deep bowl and use a hand mixer (or stand mixer with the paddle attachment) on low speed. It will shred all the chicken in under 30 seconds!
- Rest Before Shredding: Let the chicken rest in its juices for minutes after cooking before you shred it so the meat retains its moisture.
- Reduce the Juices: If the pot has much liquid after shredding simmer the shredded chicken with the lid off for 5–10 minutes so the sauce thickens and clings to the chicken.
5. Storage & Freezing
- Reheating without Drying When reheating leftovers add a splash of water, chicken broth or extra BBQ sauce and cover it to trap steam.
- BBQ pulled chicken freezes well. Pack it in airtight freezer bags flat so it thaws quickly in the fridge overnight or directly in a saucepan, on heat.
